Title: Brian Brooks Moving Company

Piñata

“Brooks is a Brooklyn-based minimalist with a mathematician’s exactitude and an interior decorator’s passion for color.”
-SUMMERDANCE Santa Barbara, Rachel Howard.com, 2004

In his newest dance, Piñata, New York based choreographer Brian Brooks makes a departure from previous works, each grounded in one color, by literally flooding the stage with the full spectrum. Piñata begins in a wash of white, with layers of confetti enveloping the stage.  The work slowly morphs into a kaleidoscope of color through the intricate use of lighting, costumes, and masses of tissue confetti. The stage serves as a literal canvas, capturing visible tracings of the choreography as the dance progresses, providing an illustration of Brooks’s sense of form and balance, and his passion for color.

Piñata's costumes are designed by Roxana Ramseur, and feature white lace, feather Mohawks, and flamenco-inspired, ruffled gowns for all 5 dancers. Candy will be provided.

Piñata is made possible, in part, through the sponsorship of The Field, with generous support from the Greenwall Foundation, and through residencies at SUMMERDANCE Santa Barbara and the University of Maryland.
